The Fairbanks North Star Borough and the Fairbanks Economic Development Corporation have joined forces to respond to Google’s solicitation for a test city to install a ultra high-speed broadband network. Google is planning to build, and test ultra-high speed broadband networks in a small number of trial locations across the country. Delivering Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today with 1 gigabit per second, think about this as 100 times faster than DSL or cable. Google will build the infrastructure that supports this ultra high-speed connection, placing the chosen community at the fore-front of cutting edge technology. This would allow users to stream 3-D images online, or download a feature length film in minutes.

As this America’s farthest north metropolitan community, we have unique geolocations, challenges, opportunities that offer Google a truly unique test bed of their new system. This is a remarkable opportunity Google is presenting and Fairbanks and the surrounding communities that will have tremendous benefits for residents, businesses and our community.
