Fort Wainwright

Fairbanks has the good fortune to have two military bases in close proximity. Adjacent to the City is Fort Wainwright, Alaska (FWA) which is home to the largest separate brigade in the U.S. Army, the 172nd Infantry Brigade (Sep) and echelons above brigade. Fort Wainwright Army Post is home of the United States Army Garrison and units of the United States Army Alaska (USARAK).

Fort Wainwright has approximately 6200 Active Duty military personnel assigned, and 7200 family members, of which, about 2900 live off-base.

The total annual payroll for military related employees is approximately $375 million.  The estimated total economic impact to the Greater Fairbanks Community is $858 million for Fiscal Year 2007.
