Forest Ownership

Large tracts of both public and private lands occur in the Tanana Basin of Interior Alaska. The State of Alaska manages 2.94 million acres¹ of commercial forestlands including the Tanana Valley State Forest (TVSF) that extends 265 miles from near the Canadian border to the village of Tanana on the Yukon River. TVSF contains 1.77 million acres² of commercial forestlands.

The Fairbanks North Star Borough, the University of Alaska Trust Lands, and the Mental Health Trust Lands are other tracts of public forestland in the basin. Within a 50-mile radius of Fairbanks, these three landowners have a combined acreage of 77,987 acres³ of commercial forestland. Federal lands are present in the basin, but contribute only small amounts of commercial forestland acreage.

Private lands are chiefly owned and managed by eight individual Alaska Native Corporations. The Interior regional native corporation, Doyon Limited, and the individual village corporations own and manage approximately one-half million acres of commercial forestland in the basin.
