Startup Weekends are weekend-long, hands-on experiences where people can come to find out if their startup ideas are viable. Entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs: Inventors, Developers, Designers, Tinkerers, Makers, Techies, Nerds, Students, Lawyers, Investors, Marketeers, and Engineers, and more (!)-- all come together to share ideas and form teams, in a risk-free environment, to build products and launch startups.
Startup Weekends begin with open-mic 60-second pitches that result in the formation of small teams around the best, most viable concepts. Teams spend Saturday and Sunday learning and focusing on to get to customer development, validating their ideas and maybe even building prototypes with the help of experienced mentors. On Sunday, teams demo their products or share about their services and receive valuable feedback from a panel of business investors. The best business ideas win prizes (!!) - the top award is a place in the 2017 Arctic Innovation Competition (Up to $10K in capital!), as well as access to resources to help startups launch.
Participants have access to co-working space, mentors, resources - and great food, so they can jump in and focus on bringing business ideas to life.
Past participants in the Fairbanks event include last year’s winners Attently – recently accepted into this year’s Launch Alaska accelerator; Fairbikes – now seen rolling all over town; and Great Oak Brewing - now open in Bristol Tennessee. Statewide, Startup Weekend events have helped to launch many entrepreneurs and successful businesses. We know it works.
