IIC-Cost of Energy Meeting Reminder

Good afternoon,

The next Cost of Energy Meeting is scheduled for WEdnesday, October 1st at 7am in the FEDC office.

Below you will see an e-mail from Dan with some notes from the last two meetings.
Please take a moment to let me know if you will be able to attend on Wednsday.

Thanks and have a great day!
DeLaina,
FEDC

The notes I have added below serve as an addendum to the notes from Sept 10.
The goals for Wednesday's meeting are to flesh out the workgroups, products, and set a schedule.
Thank you all for your attendance last week. I look forward to another lively 7 am discussion!

Best, Dan

Meeting Notes: Sept 24. IIC Cost of Energy

The IIC Cost of Energy Group met on Wednesday Sept 24. The goal of this meeting was to determine what elements will constitute an energy infrastructure plan for each of the 6 areas delineated at the Sept 10 meeting. In addition, we considered what other groups might need to be added.

The following workgroup was proposed to be changed:
1. Susitna Hydro - to be changed to 1. Large electrical power generation (incl: susitna hydro, nuclear...)

The following workgroup was proposed to be added:
1. Conservation

As such, the workgroups are now
1. Large electrical power generation (incl:
susitna hydro, nuclear...) (potential leader Frank Abegg).
2.Natural gas (potential leader someone from Doyon).
3.Fischer Tropsch (leader Bill Sackinger).
4.Distributed generation of electicity (leader Jack Hebert).
5.Coal and C.B. Methane (leader Paul Metz).
6.Biomass, Geothermal, or other alternatives (potential leader Dan White or Gwen Holdmann).
7. Conservation

We came up with the following list of proposed areas in which each workgroup might attack the question of an infrastructure plan:

1. What infrastructure must be added?
2. How does the infrastructure address space heat, electricity, transportation?
3. What are policy opportunities/barriers?
4. What funding is available/consumer costs?
5. What are environmental effects and are there locational benefits (e.g., district heat)?
6. What is the infrastructure readiness (timing)?
7. How can the energy be transported/distributed?
8. Public acceptance

IIC – Cost of Energy

Meeting Notes

September 10, 2008

At the last meeting of the cost of energy taskforce we discussed different ways of categorizing energy infrastructure so that we could come up with a logical grouping and identify lead members to guide the discussions. Our conversation focused on three potential groupings of “energy infrastructure”. The first grouping was a direct outgrowth of the Sept. 3 discussion where we talked about transportation/distribution, knowledge and categorization of resources, energy technologies and testing (test beds), fuels and energy pricing structure, laws and ordinances, and efficiency of end users. The second grouping was simpler and proposed focusing on electrical power, heat, and transportation fuels. The third grouping which seemed preferable to most of the group broke the infrastructure questions down by fuel type/energy source. This is the grouping structure which we came to near the end of the meeting and it consisted of the following categories:

1.Susitna hydroelectric (potential leader Frank Abegg).

2.Natural gas (potential leader someone from Doyon).

3.Fischer Tropsch (leader Bill Sackinger).

4.Distributed generation of electicity (leader Jack Hebert).

5.Coal and C.B. Methane (leader Paul Metz).

6.Biomass, Geothermal, or other alternatives
(potential leader Dan White or Gwen Holdmann).

The charge would be to consider the infrastructure and policy issues surrounding each of the energy sources/systems listed above.
