I thought I would send out a quick note reminding you that the Conservation workgroup of the Cost of Energy Taskforce has a meeting scheudled for today(October 7th) at noon in the FEDC office.

And, since we are on the subject, please remember that the full cost of Energy Taskforce will not be meeting tomorrow, the next scheduled meeting is next Tuesday, October 14th at 7am.

Local Chamber participation in State Chamber Legislative Tie-in

Good afternoon,
As a part of the upcoming Alaska State Chamber of Commerce Legislative Tie-in on October 30th, we will provide time on the morning agenda for local chambers to discuss the topic of "what is the primary barrier to business growth in your community?"
Our intent is to try to find common themes from the many communities and regions around the state to help us focus our discussion and establish our statewide legislative priorities. Issues that may be cause for concerns in your community may well be the same in other communities. Taxes, permitting, costs of health care, workforce availability or other issues that may be cause for concern. This discussion will help us identify common issues and help us focus our legislative positions.
Too often, our State Chamber priorities have been in conflict with each other, i.e... Spend money on this project but adopt a fiscal plan.
By focusing our discussion on the primary barriers to business growth, we hope to set legislative priorities that will allow us to be proactive rather than reactive.
Your participation and input to this discussion will be valuable to us. It will insure we have a broad statewide perspective and include items that are of importance to all communities and regions of the state.
Please let me know at your earliest convenience, of your ability and willingness to participate in this moderated discussion.
We look forward to your participation.

IIC Cost of Energy Meeitng Minutes and Workgroup Invitation

Good morning!

The Cost of Energy Taskforce met on Wednesday. The meeting minutes are included below. The taskforce has created seven workgroups and identified group chairs. The plan is that each group will meet over the next two weeks to address the questions oulined.

Please contact the FEDC office and/or the chair person if you would like to participate in one or more of the workgroups.

Group chairs---please remember to cc FEDC on your group e-mails and call or e-mail me to schedule your meetings!

I will certainly help create workgroup e-mail lists as I recieve the names of those wishing to participate.

The general purpose of the meeting was to 1) confirm working group areas of focus, 2) establish parameters & basis for analyses (�questions to be answered�), 3) agree upon format & timetable for future plenary meetings and 4) set target dates for Report drafting & completion.

Notes:

o It is the intention of the Taskforce to, like COE II, to create an Infrastructure Alternatives Matrix. Such a Matrix should allow for the individual assessment of Energy Infrastructure modes and a comparative ranking of modes.

o Meetings of Group Chairs will be bi-monthly, with Group schedules (weekly?) to be confirmed to COE III Staff by Chairs. Working Calendar below.

o Working Group titles and foci have yet to be fully solidified, specifically regarding �alternative� & �distributed� generation. Also, large gaps in Group memberships/participants remain and will need to be filled by Group Chairpersons. Finally, �industry experts� � those who may have detailed information regarding infrastructural capabilities &/or needs � will need to be contacted by Chairman or Group Chairs.

Meeting Notes: Sept 24. IIC Cost of Energy

The IIC Cost of Energy Group met on Wednesday Sept 24. The goal of this meeting was to determine what elements will constitute an energy infrastructure plan for each of the 6 areas delineated at the Sept 10 meeting. In addition, we considered what other groups might need to be added.

The following workgroup was proposed to be changed:
1. Susitna Hydro - to be changed to 1. Large electrical power generation (incl: susitna hydro, nuclear...)

The following workgroup was proposed to be added:
1. Conservation

As such, the workgroups are now
1. Large electrical power generation (incl:
susitna hydro, nuclear...) (potential leader Frank Abegg).
2.Natural gas (potential leader someone from Doyon).
3.Fischer Tropsch (leader Bill Sackinger).
4.Distributed generation of electicity (leader Jack Hebert).
5.Coal and C.B. Methane (leader Paul Metz).
6.Biomass, Geothermal, or other alternatives (potential leader Dan White or Gwen Holdmann).
7. Conservation

We came up with the following list of proposed areas in which each workgroup might attack the question of an infrastructure plan:

1. What infrastructure must be added?
2. How does the infrastructure address space heat, electricity, transportation?
3. What are policy opportunities/barriers?
4. What funding is available/consumer costs?
5. What are environmental effects and are there locational benefits (e.g., district heat)?
6. What is the infrastructure readiness (timing)?
7. How can the energy be transported/distributed?
8. Public acceptance

Hello Education Sub Committee,

I trust you have enjoyed a refreshing summer and are soaking up this last warm, sun shine.. I would like us to discuss the draft FNSBSD Science Curriculum. Would you like to meet in person for an hour, or communicate online? Did you all get a copy of the DRAFT? You can download it from FNSBSD's website, under Science Curriculum Draft 1.

I propose a face to face meeting on Sept 10 1:30-2:30. at FEDC office down town.

Please let me know what you think about the meeting and the Draft plan, so we can report back to the writing team.

Also, Terry Chapin is preparing a list of Climate Change Action Priorities for the State. Do you have specific advice in reference to State Standards and Practices to include climate change??

Thank you for your help in these matters. This is our time to support the writing team on the draft and make suggestions if you have any.
