Usibellu Coal Mine is located 115 miles south of Fairbanks, outside the small town of Healy
Usibelli Coal Mine was founded in 1943 by Emil Usibelli. The current rate of coal production at the mine is approximately 2.2 million tons of coal per year. Coal mined at Usibelli is used for electrical generation in Interior Alaska at Fort Wainwright, Eielson Air Force Base, The University of Alaska Fairbanks, Golden Valley Electric Association and Aurora Energy, LLC.
The Environmental Protection Agency has stated that coal extracted from UCM has the lowest sulfur in the nation. Other environmental benefits of the coal include low nitrogen content and high calcium content.
